All therapy for children 0-6 years are based in natural play routines.
The evidence-based model that we use, are the Early Start Denver Model, and Floortime DIR are all about
Teaching new skills through play – our therapists have a great old time making silly noises to entice eye-contact, rolling around on the floor to develop social smiles and desire to communicate and getting creative with all sorts of objects that may otherwise seem boring.
Finding what each child is interested in so that we can capture their attention and teach new skills – a child may be interested in a ball run, watching the ball roll down the tracks and ding the bell at the end. It is the job of our therapists to take this interest and teach new skills using it so that your child is motivated to learn new skills. This might look like rolling the balls up and down their arm saying “up, up, up” and “down, down down”, followed by the DING of the bell. This simple extension to a ball run can teach the child language skills, imitation, motor skills and turn taking
Building motivation of the child through “positive affect” – if a child feels like they are achieving something meaningful to them, they will be much more motivated to try and do it again. This is where “positive affect” plays a huge role – our therapists use sounds, smiles and gestures to let the child know that they have achieved something. In the ESDM, we use natural social praise, rather than token rewards. This means that ESDM sessions are full of wonderful smiles between the therapist and child.
Our simple rule is – therapy sessions should be fun for the child and fun for the therapist! When they are fun, lots of learning is able to happen with a highly motivated and happy child.
