Sensory Processing Disorder

What is Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)?

Sensory processing disorder is a complex neuro-developmental disorder that affects approximately 5% of Australian children. Kids with SPD have difficulties filtering and processing sensory informations. This is a serious condition that can make it very difficult for children to function at school, to make friends, to control their behaviour, and to do well at sport.

SPD effects the use of all sensory information including sight, hearing, smell,  taste, touch and bodily movement. The child may be easily overwhelmed by loud noises or bright lights, they may crave noise and movement, they may complain about the feelings of clothes/ seams/ tags against their skin; they maybe very fussy about the texture of their food; they may have poor coordination and be accident prone;  they may become easily overwhelmed and have frequent emotional outbursts or tantrums.

Sometimes these children function well in the home environment as parents are in tune with the childs sensory needs but have great difficulties in other environments such as childcare, school, supermarkets, shopping centres and /or playgrounds

Sensory processing problems are common in children with developmental delay, learning delay, behavioural disturbance, pervasive developmental disorders,  autism spectrum disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
