DIRFloortime® is an evidence based therapy designed for children with developmental, sensory processing, learning , emotional, behaviour problems including children with Autism. Floortime therapy provides supports and interventions that helps children reach their fullest potential. The therapist follows the child’s natural emotional interests and at the same time challenges the child towards greater and greater mastery of the social, emotional, and intellectual capacities. The objectives of the DIRFloortime® Model are to build healthy foundations for social, emotional, and intellectual capacities rather than focusing on skills and isolated behaviours. The DIRFloortime® develops educational and/or intervention programs tailored to the unique challenges and strengths of each child.
DIR Floortime sessions are generally very enjoyable for children. With young children these playful interactions may occur on the floor, but go on to include conversations and interactions in other places. DIRFloortime® emphasizes the critical role of parents and other family members because of the importance of their emotional relationships with the child. Parents are supported to apply therapy strategies at home.
Sessions take place in the clinic, child's home, childcare/ kinder, and for families living in remote areas by video link. Floortime therapy may be offered alongside a variety of other interventions. While the DIR model helps us understand and promote the positive development of all children, DIR and DIRFloortime are most commonly utilized with children with educational, social-emotional, mental health, and/or developmental challenges. DIRFloortime has become most widely known as an approach to support children with with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). For further details on research and evidence base click here
